Nelson Cruz Homers Twice as Twins Blow Out White Sox
Michael Pineda threw six innings of one-run ball, and Nelson Cruz and Miguel Sanó smacked a combined three home runs in a 10-3 thrashing of the Chicago White Sox at Guaranteed Rate Field on Saturday afternoon.
The Twins hit a total of five home runs in the game, including two from Max Kepler as Minnesota evened up the weekend’s series at a game apiece.
Iván Nova gave up four runs, and the rest of the White Sox bullpen didn’t fare much better as they gave up a combined six runs in the defeat.
Eloy Jiménez did give fans at least one thing to cheer about, demolishing his 14th home run of the season over the left field bleachers in the ninth inning of the blowout loss. Jon Jay smacked a double and drove in his fourth RBI of the season, and Leury García registered his 23rd RBI of the campaign for the Sox.
Cruz got the Twins on the board in the very first inning, homering to right field to give Minnesota a 2-0 lead. After Jay hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the frame to get the Sox within one, the Twins edged ahead again in the second when Jonathan Schoop scored on a double play from Byron Buxton to make it a 3-1 game.
The Twins kept adding on from there, as Kepler homered in the fifth and seventh innings. Sanó pounded a home run to center field in the eighth inning, and Cruz unloaded on a pitch in the ninth, sending it an estimated 469 feet to center field as the Twins romped their way to a blowout victory.
Fortunately for the White Sox, they will have Lucas Giolito on the hill Sunday when they wrap up the three game set against the Twins, and first pitch is scheduled for 1:10 p.m.
