Cool minivans and electric pony cars all fit under Chicago Auto Show’s big tent

While Ford’s electric Mustang Mach-E and Toyota’s 2021 Highlander XSE SUV sucked up a lot of oxygen at the Chicago Auto Show’s media preview Thursday, a few unlikely stars shone.

Dear to the hearts of suburbanites but scorned as unhip, the humble minivan took center stage when Chrysler debuted its 2021 all-wheel drive Pacifica.

“This new Pacifica is going to shake things up,” said Tim Kuniskis, the Fiat Chrysler executive in charge of passenger cars in North America.

That reveal was followed by Hyundai executives touting a “sensuous” Sonata Hybrid with solar panels and Honda unveiling a “radical,” shocking blue Civic Type R hatchback.

“As passenger preferences migrate from passenger cars to crossovers to SUVs, we haven’t lost sight of the fact the vehicle many people want for daily driving and road trips is — a sedan,” Hyundai Marketing Director Angela Zepeda said.

This year, a “lot of high-sales, bread-and-butter cars” with mass appeal are being emphasized, said Don Hillebrand, an engineer and chief of the Energy Systems Division at Argonne National Laboratory in Darien.

The Chicago Auto Show, which runs from Saturday through Feb. 17 at McCormick Place, opened with a bit more swagger this year.

That’s largely thanks to Detroit, which moved its North American Auto Show from January to June, giving the Second City greater prominence.

“Automakers keen to still introduce cars at this time of the year will absolutely place more focus on Chicago,” said Andrew Krok, who grew up in Elk Grove Village and blogs about cars on consumer website CNET.com. “It’s already the busiest show in terms of foot traffic, so whether or not it needs more buzz is arguable, but I think that it will give Chicago a bit more prominence in the eyes of automakers.”

Manufacturers took note.

“This is also now the very first big show of the 2020 season,” Toyota Group Vice President Edward Laukes said to applause.

This year’s show features a robust lineup of electric cars.

Choices range from Porsche’s first electric car — the Taycan priced at $103,800 to $185,000 with a range of up to 279 miles — to Hyundai’s new Ioniq electric sedan, from $22,000 to $37,000 with a range of 124 miles.

One showstopper is Ford’s sleek Mustang Mach-E, but it had competition from the crowd-pleasing Chevrolet Corvette, with the engine in the middle of the sports car.

Consumers can also benefit by advances in autonomous and self-driving features, Hillebrand said.

“Crash avoidance and features to keep you in your lane or keep you from rear-ending other cars — all these safe, self-driving features have become mainstream now,” he said.

Chicago Auto Show tickets are $13 for adults, and $8 for children ages 7 to 12 and those age 62 and older. For more information, go to chicagoautoshow.com.

Krishnamoorthi, 8th District challengers debate immigration reform

Krishnamoorthi, 8th District challengers debate immigration reform

All three candidates in the March 17 Democratic primary for the 8th Congressional District identify immigration reform among their top priorities, though they disagree over whether attaining citizenship should be a process or a one-day action.

Challenger William Olson of Schaumburg names immigration reform his most pressing issue, and said he’s already written a draft bill called “An Act to Establish a Uniform Rule of Naturalization” to be considered.

“It would provision citizenship to those in the United States desirous of it,” Olson said. “They could make application at any common court of law to do so.”

His fellow candidates are themselves immigrants. Incumbent U.S. Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi came to the United States from India as an infant, while Inam Hussain of Libertyville hails from Pakistan.

Though Olson does not describe his position on border security as “open borders,” he believes anyone physically within the U.S. should have the right to become a citizen, and ports of entry should be places of commerce and cultural exchange.

He strongly criticized the practice of separating children from their families at borders.

“My opponent (Krishnamoorthi) has asserted like most every other member in the U.S. Congress that he supports comprehensive immigration reform,” Olson said. “I might submit comprehensive immigration reform is a euphemism for a status quo of barbarism.”

But Krishnamoorthi said he supports reforms that would provide security enhancements at the border while also allowing immigrants — including millions already in the country — the same opportunity to succeed that his family received.

He and his fellow candidates touched on whether they thought the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act provided adequate protection of those for whom it was intended.

“With regard to DREAMers — those are children who were brought here to this country — they should certainly be allowed to stay, and that’s why I’m an original co-sponsor of H.R. 6, which is the Dream and Promise Act, which would allow them a pathway to citizenship because they are some of the finest people you’ll ever meet,” Krishnamoorthi said. “Finally, I’m very deeply disturbed by the way the Trump Administration has conducted our immigration policy. We should never separate children from families, we should never do anything that would treat people without the dignity and respect they deserve.”

Hussain said U.S. immigration policy must begin with a realization that nearly all Americans came from somewhere else, whether Europe centuries ago or other continents in more recent decades.

“So we have to have a comprehensive immigration policy, which we keep on postponing from one Congress to another for the last 10 years,” Hussain said. “We cannot grant everyone from day one, but the (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) people have to be in front of that. … Of course, our borders cannot be open, but we cannot have the so-called wall.”

Hussain criticized the concept of a U.S.-Mexico border wall and the use of defense funding to construct it.

“I think we have to have solid plans,” Hussain added. “We cannot keep on pushing this can to the next Congress or next group of people who can make the policy.”

The 8th District is roughly centered in Schaumburg and includes areas of northwest Cook, northeast DuPage and northeast Kane counties.

Hussain does not reside in the 8th District, but congressional candidates are not required to live in the districts they seek to represent, either before or after election.

Chapters of the League of Women Voters are hosting upcoming candidate forums to which the three hopefuls have been invited. One is at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 19, at the Gail Borden Public Library, 270 N. Grove Ave. in Elgin, and the other is at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 29, at the Schaumburg Township District Library, 130 S. Roselle Road in Schaumburg.

Republicans have not yet slated a 8th District candidate for the Nov. 3 general election.

Proposed development would add 60 townhouse units to Lake Zurich

Proposed development would add 60 townhouse units to Lake Zurich

Developers, appearing before the Lake Zurich village board, outlined a plan to build 60 luxury townhouse units and six commercial buildings on the southwest corner of Quentin Road and Route 22.

Joe Elias, owner of Vintage Luxury Homes, said at the Monday meeting that the commercial buildings would be on the north side of the lot along Route 22. The preliminary plans call for eight acres of land consisting of a bank, a coffee shop and four free-standing retail buildings, two of which are designed as drive-through establishments. Elias’ team submitted two configurations for the corner property, one with a retail building and the other with a gas station.

Elias said he’s heard significant interest from companies who want to build a gas station at the corner.

The residential section would include a central green space area with connected walking paths throughout. The plan includes 15 residential buildings with four townhouses each. Each townhouse would be two stories and include a two-car garage. Elias said the townhouses would be configured in a way where not every unit’s garage would face the street.

The project was before the board as part of the village’s courtesy review process. No votes were taken.

Trustee Janice Gannon said she thought the project looked wonderful, but added she’d spoken with neighboring residents to the west who were concerned there wouldn’t be enough trees and plants along the border. The village recently removed invasive plants and buckthorn trees in the area.

Elias said he has more than 30 years of experience designing landscapes.

“We always pride ourselves on doing a really nice job with landscaping,” Elias said.

Elias’ plan comes to the board nearly two and a half years after it rejected a similar, albeit more crowded, proposal for the same plot of vacant land.

In June 2017, the board rejected a plan to build a gas station, other commercial buildings and 42 single-family homes there. Residents at the time opposed the plans, particularly the gas station.

Elias said he plans on submitting plans in the next 30 to 45 days to get the project before the village’s Planning and Zoning Commission.

Boy, 16, Critically Wounded in Wentworth Gardens Double Shooting

Two people were shot Tuesday at the Wentworth Gardens apartments on the South Side, including a 16-year-old boy who was critically wounded.

The boy and a man, 18, were outside about 8:20 p.m. in the 200 block of West 38th Place when shots rang out, striking them both, according to Chicago police.

The 16-year-old was struck in the torso and taken to Comer Children’s Hospital in critical condition, police said. The 18-year-old was stabilized at the University of Chicago Medical Center after being shot in the hip and arm.

Area Central detectives are investigating.
